I am not old…Kombucha said so! When a doctor tells you that your tummy issues are age related and you are an extremely healthy 27 year old young lady; anyone’s automatic response would be, I need to change my doctor immediately, right?
Well I refused to accept my “old” diagnosis and started researching what could cause tummy irritation and random bloatedness.
We have all heard it; gluten intolerance, wheat intolerance, diary intolerance, yeast intolerance. With each new intolerance I learnt of, I cut it out of my diet and take it from my friends and family, I became intolerable to be around especially when we went out for food or they had me round for dinner. It became draining and my tummy was not better.
I tried a few other things, ginger tea, mint tea… with no success until I stumbled upon Garlic tea. Yes you heard me. I grated raw garlic with a little bit of ginger, lemon, all brewed and whalllla. I finally got a little relief. My bloatedness wasn’t as bad and my tummy was not as painful. There was hope. So I did what any normal person would do, I put even more garlic in my teacup and I drank it at every opportunity. Hope is an exciting thing. Well until I remembered what exactly I did for a living which is, running around person(s), at very close proximity, in an enclosed space while sweating profusely; everyday sometimes up to 3 times a day. I’m a professional squash player. What’s the problem with that you might ask, very simply…I started to stink. I couldn’t concentrate on my squash and where I was hitting the ball because I was more worried about not getting near to my opponent of fear he or she would get a waff of my garlic guzzling habit.
But my tummy was still feeling a little better so I persevered. I put more deodorant, perfume on and I bought gum for every bag I owned. Hope. I even started taking cloves of garlic to my tournaments so I could have a garlic tea on planes and as soon as I arrived because that was when my bloatedness was at it’s worst. Like I said I just did what any normal person would do. Unknowingly, my English family would rejoice at me going to tournaments as there cups of tea and coffee would finally not have a tinge of garlic. They even started hiding tea cups from me. This went on for a few months with my tummy still not feeling 100% but I was clinging to hope. Finally my family started to retaliate. I started finding cloves of garlic everywhere. I would bite into my sandwich to the very pungent taste of raw garlic. I would come off court craving my water bottle to then nearly swallowing a clove of garlic while I gulped my sports drink. It was actually a welcome message as I started to dread my garlic teas, the effort it took not to stink and it wasn’t helping anymore. Hope was lost.
One day I had an appointment with my soft tissue specialist who probably started to know who his next client was when a human form of garlic would walk through his door. (maybe that’s why I was always his last appointment, sorry Gareth). I told him about my tummy frustrations and he said I should try Kombucha. I politely said I would try it but I wasn’t hopeful. He gave me a few bottles to try and I loved the taste but after a couple of bottles, “Hope” was restored. After a few days of drinking Kombucha, my tummy finally felt normal. I went a whole day without feeling bloated which was huge for me. I didn’t feel this good in a very long time even when I was having my garlic tea, garlic sandwich and my garlic sports drink. I really couldn’t believe it, I was just so thankful.
Kombucha has now become a staple in my diet as I’m happy to say that I have very little tummy problems and more importantly I’m not longer intolerable to be around, I hope. I know it sounds unusual but thanks to Kombucha I feel healthier. Kombucha has been a savor to me and my career. Some people are scared of flying, I was more scared of how my tummy would be after flying and when I arrived at a tournament. Now as soon as I arrive I literally start hunting for Kombucha. In some countries, like the USA and Canada it is easier to find than others but the places that my search takes me are always loving and amazing places. I love the hunt and the people I encounter. So I did what any normal person would do, my friend and I formed our very own Kombucha Brand…SafferyLove Kombucha. We wanted to make the hunt for Kombucha in UK less difficult but more importantly, if Kombucha can help me so drastically and give me hope again then maybe we can do that to people that think it’s normal to have tummy issues because it’s not. We can all feel amazing and you don’t have to drink garlic tea….that’s if you don’t want to!
